The Carolyn Tanner Irish Humanities Building is a new facility designed to house the Tanner Humanities Center, the Department of History, the International Studies Center, and the Philosophy Departments on the University of Utah Campus. Academic Instructional Facilities will join with Administrative Suites, Faculty and Fellows Offices. A Cafe, Outdoor Plaza, and Courtyard are included in the Building.
The Building site is on the University of Utah Campus at 215 South Central Campus Drive. The Tanner Building is approximately 60,000 sf. The Building is four floors in height and has a basement of approximately 5,000 sf. The project includes the Philosophy Library, the Tanner Seminar Room, Faculty Office Spaces; with individual HVAC controls, Graduate Student Study/Office Spaces, and Informal Gathering Spaces on each floor. There are two auditoriums in the building one 80 seat, and one with 160 seats. The design for this project also includes a labyrinth located in the outdoor plaza with radiant heating/snow melt for year round use.
Several Architectural features of note include the glass stair tower with glass railings, treads and landings visible from the exterior. The design uses shading devices on the glazing system for increased efficiency and underground storm water retention basins. There is a cafe located on the ground floor with interior and exterior seating available.
The Tanner Humanities Building received a 2009 Honor Award from the Utah chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
