Payson Middle School
The new 121,600 square foot middle school, consisting of 18 teaching stations including a Media Center, (4) Science Labs, (2) Computer Rooms, (2) Art labs with Studio, (2) Gymnasiums, Cafeteria, Kitchen, Orchestra and Band Room was completed for the 1994-95 school year and will house 1,200 students.
A combination of load-bearing Atlas brick and conventional wood framing covered by aluminum shingles on sloped roof areas houses over 15,000 square feet of mechanical mezzanine with single ply membrane roofing at flat roof areas. An innovative design by BJUA Architects provides natural lighting in all classrooms through the combination of exterior and clerestory windows. The teaching environment is supplemented by programmable electronic communications situated in the media center with direct access to teachers via the phone system. Heating and cooling requirements are individually controlled at each classroom with the School District monitoring capabilities by remote computer. Heating is provided by a boiler, fan coil system and cooling by condensing units and rooftop evaporative coolers.
Construction of this facility began in April of 1993, and substantial completion and owner move-in was achieved by june of 1994, completed two months early, allowing Nebo School District ample time to install furnishings and set up classrooms in preparation for the 1994-95 school year.
