Spanish Fork Middle School

Owner: Nebo School District
Architect: W. Lynn Pinegar & Associates Architects
Project Value: $10,250,000
Procurement: Low Bid

The new 130,000 square foot middle school, consisting of 49 teaching stations including a Media Center, (3) Science Labs, (2) Computer Labs, (2) Art Labs with Studio, (2) Gymnasiums, Cafeteria, Kitchen, Orchestra Room and Band Room was completed for the 1996-97 school year and will house 1,400 students. As per the requirements of the Nebo School Board: All roof areas, except over the gymnasium and cafeteria are pitched with standing seam metal roofing. Interior classrooms receive natural light by means of clerestory windows, with large light wells filtering light down to the inside.

Masonry construction allows for durable surfaces, while ample fenestration provides natural light and ventilation for spaces on the perimeter. A large octagonal entry and commons area serves as a gathering place and space for activities for students and visitors. The site was a former gravel pit which required more than 20,000 cubic feet of imported soil to provide a base on which to construct the building. The sixteen-acre site was contoured and graded to provide a prominent setting for the school.

Each classroom is equipped with state of the art programmable electronic communication network system. The seamless integration of the school intercommunication and phone system provides educators with a vast array of features, all accessible from the telephone handset mounted in each classroom. The system provides a clear, clean intercom and paging throughout the school. An instructor can contact the office and communicate hands free or privately on the handset. In the event of an emergency, the instructor can send a high priority call to the office. This system also provides access to VCR's and laser discs that are installed in the media center.Ä Keeping these devices in the media center reduces theft, repair, scheduling problems and gives administrators control over the media that can be presented in the classroom.

The administration area is air-conditioned with remote condensing units. The remainder of the building is cooled with evaporative coolers. Each classroom has individual controls of heating and cooling for desired comfort level. These systems are supported by a direct digital control system allowing the school district to control the system from the district's remote maintenance office or from the control room within the middle school.
