This project is a major addition and renovation to an approximately 370,800 SF, six-story building. This facility is comprised of various academic office and retail space, Skyroom Restaurant, and the Cougareat Food Court dining areas, in addition to assorted assembly spaces. The demolition of the existing Memorial Lounge was necessary to accommodate the tremendous growth at the university by adding a new 100,000 SF, three story office addition. A New Memorial Lounge space is to be housed in a new area of the structure. This project has been scheduled in multiple phases to allow the building to remain occupied during construction while the Wilkinson center remains fully functional.
Several unique architectural features, created by the design group at MHTN Architects are displayed throughout the building. These include spectacular open spaces created by bowstring trusses in the Flexible Program Area which contribute to the state of the art student union facility, that allows the versatility to schedule events such as education week conferences, exhibits and group activities available for student organizations and campus functions. Meeting rooms and custom interior stainless steel and glass infill handrails assist in promoting the university atmosphere and improving student relations. The northwest corner of the site is surrounded by patterned concrete plaza walks attracting the attention of all students and visitors.
