OVERVIEW

The University of Utah Taft-Nicholson Bunkhouse project in Lakeview, Montana provided a much-needed replacement for an outdated remote facility used by students studying at the Taft-Nicholson Center. The new building was designed from the ground up to preserve the familiar look and character of the original bunkhouse while bringing the project up to current ADA and code standards.

The new 4,500-square-foot facility was planned to support both student housing and staff use in a remote setting. It includes 18 bunk beds and two staff apartments located on the second floor, creating a practical layout for extended stays and on-site supervision.

Because the project serves a remote location, the building also required supporting infrastructure that would allow it to operate reliably and independently. A backup generator and a new septic system were installed to accommodate the needs of the new facility and ensure dependable year-round use.

To help the replacement building feel connected to its surroundings, decorative lumber, decking, and fireplace mantles were sourced from a local supplier. These finishing touches helped the new bunkhouse blend with Lakeview’s natural and cozy character while delivering the performance expected of a modern educational facility.
