OVERVIEW
This pioneering electric roadway project is the first installation of its kind in a public roadway in the United States. Working with ASPIRE at Utah State University and Electreon, Gramoll helped bring research-grade wireless charging technology into a real-world freight and logistics setting at the Utah Inland Port.
Construction required highly precise milling and civil work so the in‑pavement EV charging materials could be installed within very tight tolerances, ensuring proper coil alignment and long-term pavement performance. Dynamic and static coils were embedded in the roadway to test charging both while vehicles are moving and while they are stationary or parked, supporting ASPIRE’s goal of validating wireless charging for heavy-duty freight fleets.
To safely operate this new technology in an active industrial corridor, dedicated striping and signage were designed around Electreon’s equipment to meet Salt Lake City’s stringent traffic and permitting requirements, while clearly communicating lane usage and charging zones to drivers. Gramoll’s careful coordination of civil work, technology installation, and traffic-control details helped turn a complex research initiative into a functional, code-compliant demonstration of next-generation EV infrastructure.
