OVERVIEW

The University of Utah BPRB Level 2 Lab Remodel reflects Gramoll’s expertise in delivering advanced research environments tailored to the evolving needs of world-class academic and biomedical research programs. Designed for the Departments of Neurology and Biochemistry, this project improves the second floor of the Biomedical Polymers Research Building to meet the latest research standards, aligning with similar upgrades completed on other floors in recent years.

The remodel transforms the floor into an open, collaborative research environment by removing walls between individual labs and installing new lab casework, high-efficiency lighting, and modern ceiling systems. Laboratory upgrades also included reconfiguration and installation provisions for fume hoods, improved HVAC ductwork routing, and electrical adjustments to align with updated research layouts, executed without exceeding the building’s existing system capacity. Data infrastructure is was updated with high-speed cabling to support the rapid data transfer and processing demands of today’s computational and imaging-intensive research.

In addition to lab spaces, the west-side office suites were renovated, creating unified and flexible work environments for faculty, researchers, and students. While the Level 2 space was fully vacated during construction, the rest of the building remained operational, requiring precise scheduling, safety coordination, and noise control to minimize impacts on ongoing research.

By combining scientific workspace design best practices with a deep understanding of construction in occupied, high-stakes research facilities, Gramoll is helping the University of Utah further its mission as a leader in biomedical discovery and innovation.
